history

The border tower on the Finkenberg in the Billmuthausen district served the GDR border regiment 9 until 1990 in border section 48 as command post 3. The nearby village of Billmuthausen was finally destroyed in 1978 because of its position in the border area, which disrupted the border regime, after the residents were expelled. The Billmuthausen memorial is located in the place of the village today. The tower is around 10 m high and was built in 1972. During the clearing of the border fortifications of the GDR, the tower was probably overlooked and fell into desolation in the following years. In 2002 the Elke, Andreas and Manuel Erhard family bought the tower and the surrounding area. Since the tower burned down in the 1990s, the interior could no longer be preserved in its original form. After extensive renovation and refurbishment by the Erhard family, the border tower was set up as a nesting place for birds of prey and suitable for bats. It was also presented to the monument protection authorities for registration. The initiators' concern is to combine this listed border facility with animal and nature conservation . Today the entire facility can be used for bat and species research. The sponsorship of the species protection, research and bat center near Bad Colberg lies with the German Board of Trustees for the Promotion of Science, Education and Culture
