Arthur's Quoit
The Arthur's Quoit , also known as Coetan Arthur, is an approximately 5,000 year old portal grave from the Neolithic period . It is near the village of St David's in Pembrokeshire in Wales . Systems of this type are known as quoits in Cornwall and Wales .
location
The Quoit is at St David's Head near the sea. The location with a panoramic view is typical of portal tombs of this type. Some researchers believe that this claimed a certain area and that the community should develop a closer relationship with this area. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs past the megalithic complex . construction
The collapsed grave today consists of a 1.5 m high bearing stone that supports a large capstone 5.9 m long and 2.6 m wide. The other end of the capstone rests directly on the ground. Two more megaliths, which probably used to carry the cover plate, lie overturned next to the cover stone. The chamber is partially below ground level. The remains of an embankment can still be found around the chamber, since the Arthur's Quoit, like other portal tombs of this type, was previously covered by a mound. The bearing stones and the cover plate were then located inside the facility. Remnants of an entrance are to the west of the chamber.
