Arthur Brockhaus

Hans-Arthur Brockhaus (born April 9, 1927 ) is a German chemist in the field of environmental medicine.

Brockhaus has a doctorate in chemistry. In the 1960s he developed a drug for the treatment of silicosis , PVNO (poly-2-vinylpyridine-N-oxide) at the Institute for Air Hygiene and Silicosis Research in Düsseldorf in collaboration with Hans-Werner Schlipköter . The polymer protects the macrophages from the quartz grains and thus prevents necrosis . It not only has a preventive effect, but also leads to regression of pulmonary fibrosis that has already occurred in animal experiments . The preventive effect against pulmonary fibrosis is limited, as later showed, to pure quartz dust.

He stayed with Schlipköter at the Institute for Environmental Hygiene at the University of Düsseldorf and later examined, among other things, lead exposure and exposure to other heavy metals in the population. He was involved in a European multinational study of the effects of lead exposure on children in terms of effects on the nervous system and brain in the 1980s.

In 1968 he received the Robert Koch Prize with Schlipköter .
