Arthur Dizier

Arthur Dizier (born September 29, 1919 in Maffee , Belgium , † April 1945 ) was a Belgian anti-fascist .

Life

Dizier was arrested in 1942 and, like many of his compatriots, deported to Germany because of his support for the Belgian resistance that formed from the end of 1940 after Hitler no longer recognized Belgium's neutrality . As a political prisoner, he was an inmate of the Buchenwald concentration camp (No. 54952) and was evacuated shortly before the end of the war together with many other inmates of this concentration camp from April 5, 1945, in order to prevent them from witnessing the crimes of the approaching Americans fell into hands. The aim of these transports was u. a. also the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Oranienburg , in order to integrate these prisoners into the death marches that took place there .

While trying to escape together with his younger brother Antoine near the train station Borkheide he was of SS -Bewachern in the nearby forest of the place shot . With the selfless and dangerous support of a resident of the forest community, his brother managed to escape by hiding him with her. He returned to his homeland in May 1945 and came to Borkheide several times before his death.

The grave of Arthur Dizier is now an officially recognized memorial and is listed in the register of architectural monuments of the municipality of Borkheide and the Brück office as one of 16 graves of victims of war and tyranny .
