Arthur Peppercorn

Arthur Henry Peppercorn (born January 29, 1889 in Leominster , † March 3, 1951 ) was the last chief designer of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).

1905 began his career as a trainee with the Great Northern Railway (GNR). He took up his post as LNER's chief designer on July 1, 1946, succeeding Edward Thompson , but in many respects resembled his predecessor Sir Nigel Gresley , some of whose employees he brought back to the offices of the LNER design department in Doncaster . He completed several projects from the time of Edward Thompson.

However, he was best known for his LNER class A1 Peppercorn and the LNER class A2 Peppercorn . These vehicles were identified as some of the best ever in the UK used steam locomotives known. He went one year after the nationalization of British Railways and establishment of British Railways in 1949 in retirement. He was chief designer for a total of three and a half years.
