Primary temporomandibular joint of a domestic goose :
1 os quadratum
2 os articulare

The Os articulare (Latin for "joint leg", short form Articulare ) is a bone of the skull of fish , amphibians, reptiles and birds . Its joint surface ( facies articularis quadratica ) forms the primary jaw joint with the os quadratum .

In the mammals the os is articular not formed. According to the Reichert - Gaupp theory, the ossicle, hammer, is formed from the articular bone in mammals .
