The whorled asparagus ( Asparagus verticillatus ) is a species of the asparagus genus ( Asparagus ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
features
Whorl asparagus is a splaying, climbing subshrub that reaches heights of 75 to 250 centimeters. The pseudo-leaves are sharply ribbed, have a papillary rough edge and a clearly triangular diameter and measure 10 to 60 × 0.5 to 0.7 (rarely up to 1.2) millimeters. There are 10 to 20 (rarely 5 or more) arranged at the node. The leaf base thorns are 3 to 5 millimeters long. The inflorescence is hemispherical and 4 millimeters long. The flower stalk is up to 5 millimeters long. The berries are 8 millimeters in diameter and black.
The flowering period extends from May to June.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.
Occurrence
Whorled asparagus is found in Romania, the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Ukraine, North and Central Turkey, Northeast Iraq, West and North Iran and Southwest Turkmenistan in light oak forests and bushes Rivers.
use
Whorled asparagus is seldom used as an ornamental plant for hedges, woody plants and trellises. The species has been in culture since 1752 at the latest.
