The Artinskium is a chronostratigraphic level of the Unterperm or the Cisuralium in the history of the earth . The level ranges in absolute numbers ( geochronologically ) from about 290.1 million years to about 279.3 million years. The Artinskium follows the Sakmarium and is replaced by the Kungurium .
Naming and history
The Artinskium is named after the place Arti (formerly Artinsk , Artinski Sawod ) in the western part of the Ural Mountains ( Russia ). The level and name were suggested by Alexander Karpinski in 1884.
Definition and GSSP
The beginning of the Artinskium is defined by the first appearance of the conodont species Sweetognathus whitei and Mesogondolella bissell . The end of the stage is reached with the first appearance of the conodont species Neostreptognathus pnevi and Neostreptograthus exculptus . A GSSP (globally valid type locality and type profile) has not yet been ratified.
