Frankie Dunlop

Francis "Frankie" Dunlop (* 6. December 1928 in Buffalo , New York ; † 7. July 2014 ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Career

Frankie Dunlop took lessons from Johnny Roland, a musician of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and played early in his musical career with Lenny Lewis and the George Clark Quartet at the Colored Musicians Club of Buffalo . After completing his military service, Dunlop moved to New York City, where he worked in the local jazz scene, in 1951 with Big Jay McNeely , in 1954 with Skippy Williams , then with Sonny Stitt , Charles Mingus ( Tijuana Moods , 1957), Thelonious Monk ( Misterioso , 1958 ; Monk In Italy , 1961), with whom he also appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1963 , and Sonny Rollins ( Alfie , 1966). In addition, Dunlop was 1958-59 with Maynard Ferguson and went with him on a European tour. He also made records with Bill Barron ( Modern Windows Suite , 1961), Wilbur Ware (1957), Joe Zawinul (1959) and Ray Crawford . In the late 1970s he played in Lionel Hampton's band .

Frankie Dunlop is the younger brother of jazz pianist Boyd Lee Dunlop (1926–2013).
