Life

Azevedo came from a wealthy family: his father was the diplomat David Gonçalves de Azevedo, his mother Emília Amália Pinto de Magalhaes came from one of the leading families in the country. The writer Aluísio Azevedo was his younger brother.

After finishing school, Azevedo got a job with the provincial administration in his state. But after a short time he lost it again because he had ridiculed the government with cartoons . He went to Rio de Janeiro and earned his living in the early years as a clerk in the Ministry of Agriculture.

At the same time he began to work as a journalist on the side; among others for “A Estaçao” and “Novidades”. Azevedo made the acquaintance of Olavo Bilac , Henrique Maximiano Coelho Neto , Alcindo Guanabara, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis , Moreia Sampio and others

Together with his brother Aluísio , he was one of the 40 founding members of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and from 1897 held the Cadeira 29 .

Artur Azevedo died on October 22, 1908 at the age of 53 in Rio de Janeiro, where he found his final resting place.
