Arthur Napoleão

Arthur Napoleão (born March 6, 1843 in Porto , † May 12, 1925 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian pianist and composer.

Life

Napoleão performed at European courts as a child. After studying in Paris and Manchester, he continued to work as a pianist. As a chamber musician he worked with the violinists Henri Vieuxtemps and Henryk Wieniawski .

In 1868 he came on a concert tour to Rio de Janeiro, where he settled as a music and instrument dealer and music publisher and worked as a conductor. He continued to perform as a pianist and chamber musician (with the Cuban violinist José White Lafitte, among others ). In 1883 he founded the Sociedade de Concertos Classicos . His most important student was the pianist and composer Chiquinha Gonzaga .

Napoleão composed an opera, orchestral and piano pieces, etudes, marches and hymns.
