Arturo Ardao

Arturo Ardao (born September 27, 1912 in the 6th sector of the Lavalleja Department , Uruguay ; † September 22, 2003 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan philosopher , historian of ideas and journalist .

Life

Ardao received his doctorate in law and social sciences from the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) in 1939 . From 1949 to 1950 he was professor of sociology at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences and from 1949 to 1974 as such for the history of ideas in America at the Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences (FHC). From 1968 to 1972 he was dean of the latter faculty. In addition, from 1963 to 1974 he held the position of director of the faculty philosophy institute. He also held other teaching posts at the Instituto de Profesores Artigas (IPA) and at the Instituto Normal Magisterial .

Ardao, who was the co-founder and collaborator of the Marcha , went into exile in Venezuela during the civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay in 1976 . There he taught and researched from 1976 to 1978 in Caracas at the Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos Rómulo Gallegos and at the Universidad Simón Bolívar .

Ardao, who has published more than 30 books, retired from the UdelaR Faculty of Law and Social Sciences in 1989 . He also received several awards. For example, in 1987 he received the Gran Premio Nacional for his intellectual work . On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Ardao was honored by the Uruguayan Senate.
