Arturo Torres Rioseco

Arturo Torres Rioseco (born October 17, 1897 in Chile , † November 3, 1971 in California ) was an American Romanist , Hispanicist and poet of Chilean origin.

life and work

Torres studied in Santiago de Chile and passed the state examination in 1918. He went to New York and taught at Williams College from 1920 to 1921 . From 1921 to 1922 he was (as the successor to Pedro Henríquez Ureña ) instructor at the University of Minnesota , from 1925 Associate Professor at the University of Texas , from 1928 in the same position at the University of California at Berkeley . In 1931 he received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota with the work Rubén Darío, casticismo y americanismo. Estudio precedido de la biografía del poeta (Cambridge, Mass./London 1931). In 1936 he became full professor of Spanish at Berkeley, was director of the institute from 1956 to 1960 and last held the chair for Latin American literature. For decades he has been a visiting professor at home and abroad.

Torres Rioseco's circle of friends included José Vasconcelos , Antonio Caso , Gabriela Mistral , Carlos Pellicer (1897–1977), Jaime Torres Bodet and Salvador Novo (1904–1974).
