Artus Quellinus III. (* 1653 in Antwerp ; † December 1686 in London ) was a Flemish sculptor from the Quellinus family of artists who worked in London.

Live and act

Artus (Arnold) Quellinus III., Sometimes erroneously called Johann Erasmus , was the son of the sculptor Artus Quellinus II (the younger) and his first wife Anna-Maria (born Gabron or Gabrau, † October 15, 1669) as well as the brother by Thomas Quellinus .

After training in his father's workshop in Antwerp, he was first mentioned in 1679 in connection with the architect Hugh May in London. Around 1680 he became an assistant to the Flemish carver and sculptor Grinling Gibbons with whom he made some joint works. Quellinus specialized in the production of marble sculptures. His works include a memorial to Thomas Thynne (around 1682) in Westminster Abbey or a portrait of Henry VI. and James II for the Royal Exchange in London. Other statues can be found in the Guildhall in London. On December 23, 1685 he signed a contract with the Patrick, Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne , a contract for the production of statues of the Kings from the House of Stuart and a bust of the Earl. He completed these before his death in September 1686 and they were in Glamis Castle in the 17th and 18th centuries . The bust and statues of James I and Charles I remained there. The statue of James II resembled the figure that stands in front of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square and depicted the ruler as a Roman emperor. King Charles II's was probably similar to the one he had made for the Guildhall. After his early death, his widow Frances (née Silrechtes, daughter of the landscape painter Jan Siberechts ) married his assistant, the sculptor Jan van Nost the Elder . Ä.
