Victor Sen Yung
Victor Sen Yung ( Chinese 揚森 ; * October 18, 1915 in San Francisco as Sen Yew Cheung ; † November 9, 1980 in North Hollywood ) was an American actor of Chinese descent.
biography
When his mother died of the Spanish flu in 1919 , he and his sister were placed in a children's home. His father returned home and came back to the United States in the mid-1920s, having remarried.
At the age of twelve, Victor Sen Yung began working as a houseboy for a family in Nob Hill. He then studied animal husbandry at the University in Berkeley . In 1938 he began acting under the name Victor Yung . He also appeared under the names Sen Young , Victor Sen Young , Victor Young and Sen Yung during his career . He also worked for a chemical company and brought samples of a flame retardant to 20th Century Fox to sell. Instead of buying the chemicals, he was cast in Honolulu for the role of Charlie Chan's number 2 son in the movie Charlie Chan . He then starred in twelve Charlie Chan films, later as Son No. 1. He became world-famous as Koch Hop Sing on the Ponderosa in the television series Bonanza , in which he appeared in 107 episodes from 1959 to 1973.
In 1974, Sen Yung published a book on Cantonese cooking called the Great Wok Cookbook (Nash Publishing). He died in his home on November 9, 1980 from poisoning caused by a gas leak in an oven.
