Jan Siberechts , also Johannes or Jean Sibrechts , Sibrecht , Siebrechts or Sybrecht (born or baptized on January 29, 1627 in Antwerp , † 1703 in London ) was a Flemish landscape painter .

Life

Siberechts was the son of a sculptor of the same name and his wife Suzanna (née Mennens). He was a student of the artist Adriaen de Bye (1593–1668). In 1648 or 1649 he became master of the Guild of Luke in his hometown. His first works date from this time. At first he painted Italian landscapes similar to other “Dutch Italian drivers” such as Jan Both or Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem and probably made a trip to Italy himself around 1650. In the 1660s he switched to depicting Flemish landscapes and rural life. He depicted unusually large (preferably female) figures in a landscape section kept cool in terms of color. A popular motif of his were fords and flooded country roads, crossed by farmers with wagons full of hay or vegetables.

In 1672 Silerechts left Antwerp and went to London. He came there probably at the invitation of the Duke of Buckingham , who had previously seen his pictures in Antwerp and who occupied him with decorating his residence, Cliveden . Silrechts traveled through England and made a name for himself in aristocratic circles with depictions of mansions. Among other things, several views of Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire were commissioned by Thomas Willoughby, 1st Baron Middleton . He also painted the estates at Longleat (1675), Chevely (1681) and Chatsworth (1694). In addition to building views, he now mostly painted larger sections of the landscape, in a warm shade of brown, often with hunting or rural scenes, individual figures taking up less space than in his earlier works. Siberechts died in London in 1703.

Siberechts was married to Maria Anna (nee Croes) since August 2, 1652. His daughter Frances married the sculptor John Nost , and another daughter worked as a lace maker for the Queen.
