Aruga Nagao
Aruga Nagao or Ariga Nagao ( Japanese 有 賀 長 雄 ; * November 13, 1860 ( traditionally : Man'en 1/10/1); † June 17, 1921 ) was a Japanese legal scholar and sociologist.
Aruga Nagao was born as the eldest son of Aruga Akinaga ( 有 賀 長 隣 ). He studied at the Osaka English School ( 大阪 英語 学校 , Ōsaka eigo gakkō ), then the Kaisei School ( 開 成 学校 , Kaisei gakkō ) and then the University of Tokyo , where he graduated in humanities in 1882. He then compiled Japanese social history there as an associate professor ( 準 助 教授 , junjo kyōju ) . He finally published this in 1883 as a three-volume work with the title Shakaigaku ( Kyūjitai : 社會學 , Shinjitai : 社会学 , German "Sociology") and is thus considered one of the founders of Japanese sociology. His teaching is based on Herbert Spencer's theory of social evolution .
In 1884 he became secretary ( 書記 官 , shokikan ) in the Japanese Senate ( Genrōin ). Then he was secretary in the secret council of state ( Sūmitsu-in ), secretary ( 秘書 官 , hishokan ) of the prime minister , but had other high offices such as B. holds the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce.
In 1886 he spent a year studying abroad in Europe. At the University of Berlin he taught Japanese social history and self-taught European history and psychology. One month before the proclamation of the Meiji Constitution , he published Kokkagaku ( 国家 学 , dt. " State doctrine "). In 1897 he received his doctorate in law and in 1911 in humanities. At Waseda University he became a full professor and council member ( 評議 員 , hyōgiin ). In addition, he was director of the Teishitsu-seido-chōsa-kyoku ( 帝室 制度 調査 局 , German "investigative authority of the institution of the imperial family"). He also taught at the Army College .
During the Russo-Japanese War 1904/1905 he was an advisor to the Japanese army in matters of international law. After the war he went to study three times in Europe and wrote Nichi-Ro-sen'eki Kokusaihōron ( 日 露 戦 役 国際法 論 , German "On international law in the Russo-Japanese War").
He was present several times for the Japanese Red Cross at the International Red Cross Conferences , and 3 times at the Hague Peace Conferences .
In 1913 he accepted an invitation from Yuan Shikai - the President of the Republic of China - and became his legal advisor.
