Aruppukkottai is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

The city is part of the Virudhunagar District . Aruppukkottai has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 36 wards .

Demographics

The city's population is 87,722 according to the 2011 census. Aruppukkottai has a gender ratio of 1014 women per 1000 men and thus a rare surplus of women for India. The literacy rate was 89.97% in 2011. Aruppukottai acts mainly as an educational and commercial center for the surrounding villages. It is known for its cotton industry, mainly spinning mills, rice milling and limestone industries, hand looms and some small industries like exercise book and calendar making. In addition to agriculture, the most important employers include spinning mills, weaving mills (hand weaving mills and weaving mills), rice factories, private transport and the public sector.

Aruppukkottai Station has a broad gauge railway that connects Manamadurai and Virudhunagar .
