Lake Ashabachye ( Russian озеро Ажабачье ) is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the far east of Russia . The lake name is derived from the name of the sockeye salmon in the language of the Itelmenen .
Lake Ashabachye is the fourth largest lake on Kamchatka with an area of 63.9 km². The lake lies at a height of about 6 m , almost 6 km south of the lower reaches of the Kamchatka River , to which it has a 12 km long drain. An almost 14 km wide ridge separates the lake from the east coast of the peninsula. The small town of Ust-Kamchatsk is 40 km east of the lake . The maximum water depth is 33 m, the mean water depth 7 m. The length of the approximately oval-shaped lake is 12.8 km, the maximum width 7.7 km.
Fish fauna
The lake is an important spawning area for sockeye salmon. There are also other salmonids , such as Salvelinus albus .
