κ Bootis ( Kappa Bootis , pronunciation: "Bo-otes") is a double star (angular distance 13.4 ") that can be separated even in small telescopes. It consists of a star of the spectral class A8 IV with an apparent magnitude of 4.54 mag and a somewhat weaker one of the spectral class F1 V and the brightness 6.58 mag. The distance from κ Bootis is approx. 155  light years .

The star bears the historical proper name Asellus Tertius . Together with the close neighboring stars θ and ι Bootis ( Asellus Primus and Asellus Secundus ), κ Bootis is on the northern edge of the constellation, near the drawbar of the Big Dipper .
