Ashton-upon-Mersey is now a district of Sale in Greater Manchester , England .

Historically, Ashton-upon-Mersey was part of Cheshire . In 1895 the area became an urban district . The District was united with the District Sale in 1930.

A hoard of Roman coins was found, but no Roman settlement has yet been found in the area. Ashton is Old English for "settlement near the ash trees" and suggests that it was an Anglo-Saxon foundation. The place is first mentioned in a document in 1260.

The writer Lascelles Abercrombie was born in Ashton-upon-Mersey.
