Ashwood is a district in the southeast of the Australian metropolis Melbourne . It is located approx. 14 km from the city center.

Ashwood was opened up in the aftermath of World War II . In 1949 a post office was opened; At the time, the district was still known as Ashburton East . In 1951 the district had 1,500 inhabitants.

The name of the district is derived from the name of the neighboring districts of Ashburton and Burwood .
