Procedures

Patients come to this hospital in different ways, but all of them pose a threat to themselves or the public. A large number, but not all, of the patients come out of prison, others are admitted to the courts or come from other hospitals. Not all patients to the hospital referred to, are also taken for treatment. Each patient who is to be admitted is examined by a group of doctors to assess their admission options. After admission, he will be subjected to further examinations in one of the admission stations. The doctor's assessment can take weeks or months, depending on the severity of the patient's condition. The length of stay in hospital varies widely and ranges from a few months to years with an average of six years. Patients remain in the hospital until their health allows them to be transferred to another facility. The majority of the patients come from North West England , the West Midlands or Wales . Ashworth Hospital patients suffer from a number of diseases. The majority suffer from psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia . Many also suffer from a personality disorder as a concomitant disease to an underlying disease, but some also have just one personality disorder.

Ashworth Hospital currently has 14 wards. It currently treats around 220 male patients.

In the surrounding towns of Maghull, Lydiate and Melling , Ashworth Hospital is known to test its siren every Monday morning at 9 a.m. The siren is used to warn residents that a dangerous patient has escaped from the hospital. This has happened twice in the history of the hospital, but these are events that preceded the commissioning of the current buildings, from which no escape has yet occurred.
