The Askanisches Gymnasium is a listed building in Berlin-Kreuzberg at Halleschen Strasse 24, 27 and 28. It was built in the style of academic historicism from 1874 to 1875 based on designs by the architects Hermann Blankenstein and Adolf Reich and was used by the Askanisches Gymnasium until 1929 . It has been the seat of the Clara Grunwald School since 1992 .

building

The Askanische Gymnasium was originally built as a complex of two four-storey single-wing buildings with a construction area of 909 m² in a closed construction. The northern building was on Halleschen Strasse, the southern wing on what is now a built-up part of the parallel Kleinbeerenstrasse (at that time house number 2). The building plot was bought from the Cöllnisches Gymnasium by the City of Berlin in 1869 .

The northern building has a 47 meter long, symmetrical front made of yellow brick, from which emerges a risalit-like central section with a stepped portal flanked by columns. The facade is structured horizontally by dark brick bands on the ground floor and first floor, arched windows from the ground floor to the second floor, pairs of round arched windows on the third floor and cornices above the ground floor and first floor. High arched windows in the middle part indicate the seat of the school auditorium. The front is completed by ornamental strips on a blue primer under a high stone railing with a cantilevered roof.

The southern building of the Askanisches Gymnasium was destroyed in World War II.

use

The Askanisches Gymnasium moved into the building in 1875 as a new establishment of a humanistic and ancient-language educational institution and soon acquired the reputation of an elite high school . It was named after the Askanischer Platz near Halleschen Straße and was located here until 1929. It has been located on Kaiserin-Augusta-Strasse in Berlin-Tempelhof since 1945 .

The building subsequently served as the seat of vocational schools such as the Theodor-Litt-Oberschule , the northern wing later as a second seat and alternative quarters for municipal schools. The auditorium of the building was also used as a chamber music hall between 1948 and 1954, as evidenced by a corresponding lettering above the entrance portal. The Clara-Grunwald-Schule has been based here since 1992. As a primary school, it is committed to the reform pedagogical principles of Maria Montessori .
