Askatin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Askatin († before 1278 ) was a clergyman and diplomat working in Norway . After serving as Chancellor of King Magnus Håkonsson , he was Bishop of Bergen from 1270 .

Askatin was probably not a Norwegian. Presumably it came from England , because in a copy of a document from the 14th century made around 1640 it is referred to as an anglus . Probably by the end of the 1240s at the latest, Askatin served at the court of King Håkon Håkonson . In 1250 he was a member of the Norwegian embassy that was sent to the Roman-German Emperor Friedrich II . However, the emperor died before the embassy reached him. From 1260 to 1261 he was involved in the negotiations about the marriage of the heir to the throne Magnus with the Danish king's daughter Ingeborg . During the war with Scotland in 1263 he accompanied the king on his campaign to the West Scottish islands . After the failure of the campaign and the death of the king in December 1263, Askatin traveled to Scotland for negotiations with Bishop Henrik of Orkney from the Orkney Islands in the spring of 1264 . As Chancellor of King Magnus, he sealed the peace of Perth in July 1266 , which ended the war with Scotland. This makes him the first known chancellor of a Norwegian king. In 1269 he traded with the English King Heinrich III. a peace and trade agreement. In 1270 he finally became bishop of the Norwegian diocese of Bergen . As bishop he resigned from the office of chancellor, but he remained one of the king's closest advisers. On his advice, the king founded a cathedral chapter in 1271 for the Apostle Church in Bergen , located near Bergenhus Castle . In 1274 Askatin took part in the Second Council of Lyon . He died shortly before 1278.
