Asloun Castle

Asloun Castle , also Asloon Castle , is a ruined castle about 3 km southwest of the village of Alford in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . From the castle with a Z-shaped floor plan from the 16th century only the ruins of a tower remain. It is located just east of the Castleton of Asloun and north of the Strow Burn Stream . The ruin is a Scheduled Monument .

history

The castle was built on behalf of the Calder clan , but later came into the possession of the Forbes clan .

In 1645, James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose , stayed at the castle the night before the Battle of Alford .

architecture

The three-story tower has its entrance on the south side; this was the main entrance to the castle. This only tower that is still partially preserved is the south-east tower of the castle. A spiral staircase was built into the first floor there. The ground floor was designed as a stone vault.

In the basement of the tower there are round loopholes , while the openings on the upper floors are decorated with ornate bulges. On the upper floor of the tower there appears to have been a private room belonging to the owners, accessible from the main part of the castle. It was exposed through a large window.

There are two heraldic niches, both empty, one above the entrance and the other above a window slot on the 1st floor.
