Auchanachie Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Auchanachie Castle , also Achanachie Castle or Auchanachy Castle , is the ruin of a residential tower from the 16th century, about 8 km northwest of Huntly in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire .

history

Auchanachie Castle was probably built as a tall tower, but then cut in height in the 17th century when the extension was built. The oldest son of Clan Gordon from Avochie lived there . Then the castle fell to the second son of the 4th laird, whose family still owns it today. Part of it that has been modernized is still inhabited today.

architecture

The tower now has three floors and the eastern, right-angled extension has two floors. The year 1594 can be found above the entrance. In the corner of the building is a round stair tower; it has loopholes under the roof overhang and window slits.

There is a massive chimney on the east facade, even if the associated open chimney was bricked up. Near the fireplace there is a passage with the inscription "FROM OVR ENEMIES DEFENDE VS CHRIST" above it. The cellar is designed as a vault; the center of the vault is decorated with the arms of the Campbells , Frasers and Gordons. A spiral staircase leads to the vaulted knight's hall on the 1st floor, which is quite small.

The building has been renovated and freshly plastered. There is a round pigeon house on the property from the 17th century, which is also plastered.

Historic Scotland has listed Auchanachie Castle as a Category A Historic Building.
