The Asociación del Básquetbol Sudamericano ( acronym : ABaSu ; German  South American Basketball Association ) is an association of national South American basketball associations within the sub-zone of the continental association FIBA America .

Members

The member associations of the South American sub-zone geographically cover almost the entire South American sub-continent except for the former colonies of Guiana that did not belong to Spain or Portugal and are now part of the Central American sub-zone of FIBA America.

Competitions

The organization was founded as the successor to the Confederación Sudamericana de Baloncesto , which previously hosted the South American Basketball Championships for national teams, which has been the most traditional international competition for national teams since it was first held in 1930, and the South American Cup of Masters , which was the official international competition with the longest tradition from 1946 to 2008 Competition for club teams was organized. After the South American Cup of Masters was discontinued in favor of the FIBA Liga de las Americas , the ABaSu is entrusted with the organization of the Sudamericana League, founded in 2003, in addition to the South American Championships for national teams .

Foundation and tasks

The ABaSu was set up on November 14, 2008 in the Paraguayan capital Asunción by the presidents of the national founding associations and an authorized representative of the Peruvian association in a founding document as a sub-organization of FIBA America . The Venezuelan Association only joined the organization later. The association thus virtually succeeded the Confederación Sudamericana de Baloncesto , which had previously formed a similar association and organized supranational competitions on the South American subcontinent.
