Aspidoras is a genus fromthe armored catfish family (Callichthyidae).

features

Aspidoras species hardly grow longer than 4 cm. In contrast to all other genera of armored catfish, they have two skull montanelles (all others only one). The head is high, rounded at the front and slightly flattened at the sides. The eyes are small. The spines of the dorsal fin and pectoral fins are short and thick. On the mouth there are two pairs of barbels on the upper lip and one on the lower lip. The barbels are short and do not reach the cleft gills.

Systematics and research history

R. v. In 1907 Ihering described the genus Aspidoras , the type of which was Aspidoras rochai . But in the same year Steindachner reported concerns and left the species "raimundi" in the genus Corydoras in his new description . Gosline took over the genus Aspidoras in 1940 in a revision of the armored and callous catfish . If you look at Table 1 “comparison of generetic characters” with regard to the genus Aspidoras - Corydoras and Brochis in this work , then the genus Aspidoras differs from the other two genera due to the round fontanel.

In the description of the species of Corydoras pygmaeus (1966), the genus Aspidoras was not considered valid by Knaack and a detailed explanation of the move was announced. This should take place within a family revision, which is still pending due to the political situation at the time, including its effects on aquaristics and ichthyology . Finally, Weitzmann and Nijssen (1970), when they described Corydoras pauciradiatus , also saw the classification of this species in the genus Corydoras as justified. Only Miranda-Ribeiro (1949) classified the species “lakoi” he described in the genus Aspidoras . Ultimately, Nijssen and Isbrücker (1976) assume a valid species. As a decisive differentiation from the genus Corydoras , two cranial montanelles are named among the Aspidoras species. In this revision, the species Corydoras raimundi (Steindachner 1907) and Corydoras pauciradiatus (Weitzmann & Nijssen 1970) were taken over into the genus Aspidoras . Aspidoras lakoi (Miranda-Ribeiro 1949) was recognized and adopted as a good species.

Another species, Aspidoras sp. aff. poecilus , was mentioned in this work. In 1980, four years after this revision, Nijssen & Isbrücker described Aspidoras virgulatus . This fish is one of the most beautiful of its kind. Although this Aspidoras also fundamentally distances itself from the others of its kind in one characteristic. In their first description, Nijssen & Isbrücker mention that five male paratypes have bristles on their cheeks. This sexual dimorphism is also known from some Corydoras but not from catfish of the genus Aspidoras . Almost twenty years passed before Britto described two new Aspidoras . Aspidoras microgalaeus (Britto, 1998) and Aspidoras belenos (Britto, 1998). At present, 20 species of aspidoras have been scientifically described. In the following years representatives of this genus were imported again and again, the final description of which is still pending. For example, Aspidoras sp. "Black Phantom" (C 35) for excitement among catfish lovers. The males of this species show a black dorsal fin and a very contrasting pattern of spots. Also C 36, probably comes from the Araguaia collection and is a striking Aspidoras with its strong silver sheen .
