Aspidosperma alkaloids
Aspidosperma alkaloids are natural substances of the indole alkaloid type. You come u. a. in Aspidosperma species in the dog venom family ( Apocynaceae ).
Occurrence
The aspidospermidine and quebrachamine were isolated from the quebracho tree ( Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco ) native to Argentina, Bolivia and Chile . Aspidospermin has also been isolated from this and other Aspidosperma species. The bark of the quebracho tree is traded as quebracho bark. Extracts of the drug have a breathtaking effect and were used to relieve asthma.
Representative
There are more than a hundred aspidosperma alkaloids. Important representatives are u. a. Aspidospermine , aspidospermidine , quebrachamine , yohimbine and vincamine .
Stereochemistry
If in this article or in the scientific literature one of these alkaloids is named without any additional name, it actually means:
- Aspidospermin for (-) - aspidospermin,
- Aspidospermidine for (+) - aspidospermidine,
- Quebrachamin for (-) - quebrachamin and
- Vincamine for (+) - vincamine.
The expressions in brackets stand for the sense of rotation of the optical activity of these substances.
