The Associação Novo Macau (also Associação de Macau Novo , Portuguese for association "New Macau" ; Chinese新 澳門 學 社) is a political party in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China . Since the general election in 2017 is Sulu Sou Ka Hou the only deputies of the party in the Legislative Assembly of Macau .
history
On July 10, 1992, the Associação Novo Macau was founded as a political platform, while the Portuguese sovereignty over Macau. After the transfer of sovereignty over Macau to the People's Republic of China, the organization distinguished itself as part of the pro-democracy camp and stood up for democracy , a good livelihood for the people and against corruption . Before the parliamentary elections in 2013 , the then chairman Jason Chao commissioned the politician Zhang Shujian to coordinate the election and the nomination. Individual determination also met resistance within the organization. In addition, in 2014 at the latest with the election of Sulu Sou Ka Hou as the new chairman, the external image of the organization changed. Among other things, this led to the fact that the two MPs for the Associação Novo Macau António Ng and Au Kam San distanced themselves from the Associação Novo Macau and indeed remained members, but saw themselves increasingly as more independent MPs.
After 2014, the Associação Novo Macau developed into a gathering point for young political activists who advocate more democracy and want a stronger pro-democracy camp for Macau like the one in Hong Kong with the umbrella movement . Sulu Sou Ka Hou, then chairman and now the only member of the Associação Novo Macau, also became the youngest member of the Legislative Assembly after the 2017 general election. This change in the organization's policy led Au Kam San in 2016 and ultimately António Ng in 2017 to leave the organization for good after internal differences. Au Kam San said in an email that the pressure on politicians becomes too great when an organization like the Associação Novo Macau promotes democracy in a conservative system like the Macau political system. Since the pro-Beijing camp in Macau is much stronger than in Hong Kong, it is easier to dismantle democracy and put pressure on opposition politicians. The pro-democracy camp in Macau also has little popular support, and civil society is comparatively weak.
Alignment
The Associação Novo Macau is particularly committed to more democracy in Macau. In concrete terms, this means that Macau's head of government should no longer be elected by an election committee, but by the entire population. In addition, all of the 33 seats in the Legislative Assembly are to be directly elected by the people, currently there are only 14. Other key issues today include safeguarding freedom of the press , general human and civil rights and environmental policy .
Basically, the Associação Novo Macau sees itself as a voice for more democracy, the rule of law and a liberal democracy . Within the pro-democracy camp, the Associação Novo Macau has been the most influential organization for years, but the internal dispute and the resignation of two important parliamentarians has reduced its influence somewhat. However, the reorientation by young political activists has given the organization a new look. Through this activism, some of the demands of the Associação Novo Macau can also be described as radical democratic . In the political spectrum as well different orientations are included. The spectrum ranges from left-wing politicians to the political center .
The organization rejects more extreme demands such as independence movements like in Hong Kong.
