The Association des cercles d'étudiants luxembourgeois (ACEL) is the umbrella organization of Luxembourg student associations and was founded in 1984. ACEL has over 40 branches spread across Europe and represents over 10,000 students , making it the largest and most important student representative in Luxembourg. The ACEL is ideologically and politically neutral, this means that no specific party political opinions are represented in order to meet the demands of all students.

description

A large number of Luxembourg students study abroad as the number of complete and in-depth courses in Luxembourg is limited. This leads to a unique situation that has many positive aspects and, among other things, has led to the establishment of student associations in several European university cities. Today the student associations form the active branches of ACEL and are spread over 9 countries: Belgium , Germany , France , Great Britain , Luxembourg , the Netherlands , Austria , Switzerland and the United States . These student associations receive and unite Luxembourg students during their studies in the respective cities. The ACEL also has eight subject-specific student bodies: medicine , business administration , law , psychology , librarianship , engineering , history and communication .

Since its inception, ACEL has set itself three main operational goals:

  • Bringing together Luxembourg students abroad and in Luxembourg;
  • Informing students and prospective students;
  • Representing and defending the rights of students at national and international level.

information

One of the main fields of activity of ACEL is informing students. In order to do justice to this, ACEL publishes its Guide du futur diplômé annually , which is intended to make it easier for students to enter the labor market. Furthermore, ACEL informs future students with the help of its Guide du futur étudiant , which was first published in 1987. Since then, the Guide du futur diplômé has been published annually in September and contains practical information on the various cities and universities. It is written together with the member student associations and answers questions about looking for accommodation, enrollments and other matters. Both publications are free and can be obtained from every Sparkasse in Luxembourg, from CEDIES and from ACEL.

In addition to both brochures, ACEL also publishes its '' ZOOM '', which is being published for the student fair. It is a student-written newspaper that enables readers to get an overview of what has been going on over the past year. From activity reports from student associations to project reports from ACEL, the most important things happen in review.

D'ACEL represents six fir is a brochure with the most important information about ACEL and its three main fields of activity.

In addition, the ACEL and the student associations attend the so-called '' Foire de l'étudiant "student fair every year to answer schoolchildren's questions about future studies.

ACEL organizes student- themed day trips to the nearby university towns, organized in conjunction with the local student associations. The participating pupils and students have the opportunity to get to know the city, the university and the courses. Because the choice of course comes with a lot of responsibility, the day trip student for a day is a good way to choose the right course of study after graduating from high school.

Bring together

ACEL also ensures cohesion between the student associations. ACEL does this with various events throughout the year:

De Studentebal

The ACEL ball is the largest student ball in Luxembourg. Together with ACEL, over 20 student associations are represented and sell typical drinks from their respective university cities. This event is the opportunity for Luxembourg students to meet again, as they are spread across Europe during the academic year. The student associations help both with the construction and with the dismantling and share the profits among themselves. This enables them to fund many activities for their members in the coming academic year.

REEL

La Réunion européenne des étudiants luxembourgeois (The European Gathering of Luxembourg Students) is one of the most important activities of the year for Luxembourg students. REEL has been held in a different city every year since 1984. Every year 120 students take part in this meeting, which lasts four days. The program includes political discussions, cultural visits, meet and greets with partners and festive evenings. Every year the REEL has a special motto that affects the students and which forms the basis for political discussions. Thus, the REEL is the opportunity for Luxembourg students to take part in political discussions, meet potential future employees and get to know students from other university cities.

Tournoi de Noël

The Tournoi de Noël has also become an integral part of Luxembourg's student culture. During the winter holidays, the various student associations compete against each other in football, basketball and volleyball. Even if everyone does their best to win, the focus is nonetheless on having fun. LASEL organizes the sporting part and ACEL takes care of the legal organization. The proceeds from the two days will always be donated to a good cause. In recent years, for example, it has been donated to the Fondation Concert and ACEL and its student associations took part in the Relais pour la vie .

Intercercle and balls

Throughout the year the student associations try to organize various events. On a so-called intercercle , a student association organizes a beach volleyball tournament, a barbecue or a cultural activity in their respective city and invites the other ACEL student associations to do so. The goal is to get to know and exchange with other students, to have fun and new experiences.

Various student associations also try to hold balls during the school year. Famous balls such as those from Zurich, Brussels or Munich have existed for years. Here, too, ACEL tries to motivate as much as possible by contributing to the costs. The aim of such balls is also the profit, which enables the student associations to propose many activities to their members throughout the year.

Represent

No less important than informing and bringing together is the representation of the students in front of the authorities and the defense of their rights. To this end, ACEL maintains a regular dialogue with the responsible ministries, such as the Ministry for Higher Education and Research.

ACEL seeks constructive discussions with the ministry throughout the year to address topical issues affecting students. For example, an increase in funding was achieved, which was implemented in 2016.

In addition, ACEL tries to ensure that Luxembourgers who study in Germany do not have to pay the GEZ, and those who study in France do not have to pay their taxe d'habitation .

ACEL is involved in a wide range of matters for Luxembourg students and liaises with both national and international authorities to resolve problems.
