Astrik ( Hungarian spelling Asztrik ; also Anastasius , Astricus or Ascherich ; † 1037 ) was a clergyman of unknown origin who became abbot of the Břevnov monastery near Prague in 993 and first archbishop of Gran (Hungarian Esztergom ) in 1006 . He paved the way for the coronation of St. Stephen of Hungary and laid the foundations for the Hungarian church organization. He is often called "the apostle of Hungary ". However, the details of his biography are uncertain and in some cases contradictory.

Life

There are different assumptions about the origin of Astrik. A German or French-Burgundian origin is assumed. Other sources indicate Czech origin. Astrik was a student of St. Adalbert von Prag , whom he accompanied to Rome in 993 and to Poland in 996/997.

The first written mention comes from the year 993. At that time Astrik became the first abbot of the Břevnov monastery. According to the founding charter, he received from Pope John XV. the right to wear episcopal insignia . After the Slavníkovci died out , the monks left the monastery and fled to Poland . For the Benedictines from Břevnov and other Bohemian monasteries, Bishop Adalbert of Prague founded an abbey in Meseritz, Poland, and appointed his companion Astrik to be abbot. Later he received episcopal ordination and even the pallium of an archbishop in Subottin, whose location is now unknown .

After the Battle of Libice (September 28, 995), Astrik came to Hungary with some monks at Radla's invitation . He later contacted the Hungarian court and traveled to Rome in 1000/1001 to obtain papal approval for Stephen's coronation and the establishment of the Hungarian bishoprics. As abbot of Pécsvárad and from about 1006 as archbishop of Gran and Kalocsa , he was Stephen's most important ecclesiastical collaborator.
