Asunción Nochixtlán is a city with about 15,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name ( municipio ) with a total of about 19,000 inhabitants in the northwest of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico .
Location and climate
The place Asunción Nochixtlán is located directly on the road connecting Mexico City and Oaxaca de Juárez a good 88 km (driving distance) northwest of the city of Oaxaca at an altitude of approx. 2080 m . Already in pre-Hispanic times Nochixtlan was an important economic and trade center of the Mixtec -Indianer; The most important commodity was the cochineal dye obtained in the region . The people of the region still live largely self-sufficient from the yields of their fields (corn, wheat) and gardens (potatoes, beans, tomatoes, chilli etc.). Cattle breeding was only practiced to a limited extent (chickens, turkeys); it now plays an important role in the surrounding villages. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the city itself.
history
The Indians living here resisted both the Aztec and Spanish occupations, but the site was abandoned due to several epidemics in the early 1520s. A new foundation took place in 1527 by Francisco de Orozco and about 50 surviving Mixtec Indians.
On June 19, 2016, a confrontation between protesters from the education union CNTE and units of the Federal Police (Policia Federal) resulted in road blockades as part of protests against educational reform , in which at least six civilians were killed and over 100 injured.
Attractions
The double-towered parish church of Santa María de la Asunción is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . It is a strict, classicist building from the 18th century with a crossing dome resting on a windowed drum . Among the numerous figures from the 17th and 18th centuries there is also a Mater dolorosa .
