Asya Abdullah (* 1971 in al-Malikiya , Kurdish دێریکا هەمکۆ Dêrika Hemko in al-Hasakah governorate ) is a Syrian - Kurdish politician.

Life

Abdullah was a member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party for 25 years and was active in this function in the Iraqi Kandil Mountains . In 2003, she helped found the PYD in Syria . From 2012 to September 2017 she was their chairman together with Salih Muslim and represented them internationally. For example, she gave a speech at the New World Summit organized by Jonas Staal , a temporary message from Rojava , in the city hall of Oslo. She caused a stir when she met the then French President François Hollande in Paris. This meeting was seen as a provocation for Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . In the elections for the PYD party leadership in September 2017, she was replaced by Ayshe Hiso . After her time as chairman of the PYD, she was appointed co-chair of the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM). She remained in this position until August 2018.
