Atanas Christow Michajlow ( Bulgarian Атанас Михайлов Христов ; * July 5, 1949 , † October 1, 2006 ) was a Bulgarian football player . The offensive player was Bulgarian Footballer of the Year in 1979 .
Athletic career
Michajlow played as a striker for Lokomotiv Sofia between 1965 and 1981 and was the most successful attacker in the club's history with 145 goals in 348 games. In 1978 he won the national championship title with the team, in the 1978/79 European Cup he failed with the club at the German representative 1. FC Köln in the second round. Third in the table in 1979, he qualified with the team for the 1979/80 UEFA Cup . There, with a total of six goals in the competition, he contributed significantly to the best result at European level when the quarter-finals were reached: In the second round match against AS Monaco , he scored all the Bulgarian club's goals in a 4-2 win. Again the competition ended against a German club, VfB Stuttgart ultimately won both quarter-finals. From 1981 Michajlow let his career at the Cypriot club Nea Salamis Famagusta end.
Michajlow took part in the 1968 Olympic Games , in which Bulgaria won the silver medal after losing 4-1 in the final to Hungary. He then missed participation in the 1970 World Cup with the Bulgarian national team due to injury , but was in the squad for the 1974 World Cup finals. In total, he played 45 international matches ; The free kick specialist scored 23 goals.
