The Atanasov Lake ( bulgar. Атанасовско езеро ) is located immediately northeast of the city of Burgas in Bulgaria . The salt water lake is located near the coast of the Black Sea and is about 5 km long. A narrow strip of sand roughly in the middle of the lake, on which the Burgas-Varna motorway runs, divides the lake into two sections. The southern part is enclosed between the Sornitsa , Isgrew , Lasur and Sarafowo districts of Burgas .
Salt has been extracted in Lake Atanasov since ancient times. In 2008 excavations in the area of Wetren near “Solna Niwa” (German: Salt-Acker) found more than 250 artefacts, the oldest of which are dated at least 6,000 years before Christ. The finds testify to a developed agriculture, livestock and salt production in this area. Ritual items belonging to a priest-king were also found.
The northern part of the lake is an important habitat for various bird species and has been under protection since 1980.
