info First Atari flashback model with HD resolution through HDMI cable (8 gold)

The Atari Flashback 8 is a stationary game console from the Atari Flashback series , which was developed by AtGames and released in September 2017 and contains 105 preinstalled, officially non-expandable Atari 2600 games. It is the successor to the Atari Flashback 7 released in 2015. The MSRP is $ 39.99 in the United States. With the Atari Flashback 8 Deluxe , an identical model of the console has been released, which includes two paddles as an addition . With the Atari Flashback 8 Gold , another model has been released that is connected with a 720p HDMI cable instead of a 480p composite video . This model is therefore the first in the Flashback series that can output content in HD. Other exclusive features of this model are a rewind and memory function as well as a CRT filter. It also includes a 2.4 GHz wireless controller and 15 other games for the first time, increasing the game selection to a total of 120. With the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Deluxe Edition , a variant was released that combines the advantages of the 8 Deluxe and 8 Gold. Another model called the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Activision Edition has been released, which is identical to the 8 Gold but specializes in Activision games. This model contains 20 additional games from Activision, but 10 other games that were included in the 8 Gold have been removed, making it 130 games.

In 2018 the successor model Atari Flashback 9 appeared , which also received a gold model. Differences to Flashback 8 are the game selection , the built-in SD card nslot, selectable screen borders, the slightly changed game selection screen, the ability to delete games, the position of the HDMI connection (on the back instead of on the left) and the power cable (on the Flashback 9 below) and the fact that you no longer need a screwdriver to open the battery flap on the underside of the housing of the two controllers. However, the housing of the controller remained the same, which means that the hole in which the screw fit was retained.

The models 8 Deluxe, 8 Gold Deluxe and 8 Gold Activision Edition did not appear in Germany.

reception

Lite magazine tested the Atari Flashback 8 Gold and praised it for the selection of games, the HD resolution and the "attractive price".

Techstage also tested the 8 gold and praised the selection of games, the retro feel and the emulation. The placement of the HDMI connection (on the left) and the design of the housing were criticized.

The joysticks of the controllers of the 8 Gold, which are easier to operate than those of the original Atari 2600, were praised.
