info With Atari video pinball series, first single game console after home pong

With the stationary Atari SC-450 game console ( SC stands for Stunt Cycle ), Stunt Cycle could also be played at home. With the Atari video pinball series, it is the first game console after the home pong that is exclusively designed for single player mode .

Game description

The original version is a black and white game. The route is divided into three superimposed sections, with the buses on the lower one. The player has to steer the motorcycle with Evil Knievel and jump over the busses placed one behind the other, not touching the busses at the back or missing the landing ramp when landing. After each lap there is one more bus there. The view is from the side 2D perspective. Up to two players can play (taking turns).

The arcade machine did not yet have a microprocessor , but it did have a ROM chip to store the graphic data. The graphics were already in the raster graphics technology. The input was made via a motorcycle handlebar with gas and brake switches.

Since this is a so-called "shaking game", the joysticks on most console versions were quickly defective (see also button mashing ).

Ports

(Abstract)

  • Stunt Cycle SC-450 / "Stunt Debbie" (Atari, 1977, color version with motorcycle handles)
  • Sears Motocross ( Sears , with Pong variants)
  • Atari Game Brain (Atari console C-700, prototype)
  • Atari 2600 (prototype 1980)
  • Commodore 64 (1988 RUN / IDG Communications)

The ports for home computers appeared partly under different names or could be programmed by yourself. Improved games like Motocross and Excitebike followed later .

emulation

The original arcade games without microprocessors can not be emulated with most emulators like MAME (with the exception of Pong ). Since September 2012, Stunt Cycle has been supported by the free SourceForge project DICE (Discrete Integrated Circuit Emulator).
