Atari VCS (initially developed under the code name Ataribox ) is a stationary game console that, according to Atari SA , should have been available from 2019. The system was presented to the public for the first time in June 2017, and the pre-order phase began on May 30, 2018.

While the physical design of the console is based on the Atari 2600 console released by Atari Inc. in 1977 , the system will be compatible with modern games and multimedia services thanks to a Linux- based operating system . It will cost at least $ 250. The console is manufactured by Flex , the game controller by PowerA . It should be available for pre-orderers in December 2019, which could not be implemented due to delivery bottlenecks at various component suppliers; it should be available in retail stores from March 2020. In the meantime, doubts had arisen about whether the game console would even hit the market after the main developer, Rob Wyatt, turned his back on the project. In August 2020, the release of the console was confirmed again. It should support blockchain games. In August 2020, a cooperation with Plex was announced.

software

The Atari VCS should run on a Linux-based operating system and contain some pre-installed classic Atari games. The software was specially designed so that users can load other Linux-compatible applications onto the system. These include live stream applications, music players and Internet browsers . The game console should not have a slot for game modules . Atari SA has not disclosed any further information about the software.
