The Atene is a schooner that was constructed in 1909 in the Danish shipyard Fredriksöens Varv in Svendborg . After numerous conversions and restorations, the Atene is largely in its original condition and is used as an excursion boat.

history

The two-master was originally christened Emanuel and sailed under the Danish flag for five years before it was sold to Norway in 1916. Another five years later, the ship, which at the time was equipped with a 35 hp engine, became Swedish ownership and was renamed Anna Lisa . The schooner was shipwrecked in 1927 and over the next two years it was repaired and re-rigged into a ketch at the Bjökenäs shipyard. In 1937 the ship received a new engine with 50 hp.

In 1961 the Swedish writer Sune Broberg bought the ship; he wanted to use it as a yacht for excursions. But just a year later, John Stefanus Andersson took over the ship and converted it into a coastal clipper that transported fish waste across the North Sea . Three years later the ship changed hands again, was re-rigged as a schooner and was given the name Atene, which is still valid today . From this point on, the Atene was used as a pure pleasure ship.

In 1980 the newly founded M / S Atene cooperative took over the ship and began a complete restoration. The main concern was to bring the Atene into a shape that was as close as possible to the original condition from 1909. Until 1996, the ship was rebuilt in various shipyards, so the stern was pulled higher, and the ship got a deck jump again . The largest restoration was carried out in the Danish Strandby shipyard in 1996, when the ship received a new keel and fittings and almost all the frames were replaced. The rigging had already been renovated beforehand so that the Atene was again equipped with the original standing rig . The last renovation work took place in 2003 when the main sails were replaced, a new engine was installed and the cabins were renovated.
