Atheist is an American death metal - band from Sarasota , Florida , in 1984 by Kelly Shaefer and Steve Flynn initially under the name Oblivion was founded. Later the band called themselves RAVAGE ( Raging Atheists Vowing A Gory End ), finally just an atheist .

history

Between 1989 and 1993 Atheist recorded three albums, which thanks to their progressive approach enjoy a high reputation not only in the heavy metal scene, but also among fans of progressive rock . The vinyl albums and CDs, which have long since been out of print, are coveted collector's items. In 2005 the three studio albums were re-released, each with a few bonus tracks (demo recordings & instrumentals) on Relapse Records .

After the recording of the first album, Roger Patterson died in an accident with the tour bus on February 12, 1991 and was replaced by Tony Choy ( Cynic , Pestilence ) on bass, who contributed to the recording of the two following albums.

In early 2006, the band reformed and signed a contract with the Season of Mist music label . On August 3, 2010, the band officially announced their split from Tony Choy, who was replaced by Jonathan Thompson on the fourth album Jupiter , which was announced in Europe for November 8th .
