The Athene Primary School is a German-Greek state European school in Berlin , in which the learning groups are always composed in two languages. It is located in the Lichterfelde district ( Steglitz-Zehlendorf district ) at Curtiusstrasse 37 and includes grades 1-6.
history
In 1988, the competition to build a primary school and daycare center with a gym and outdoor areas was announced. The construction turned out to be particularly difficult because the property, which formerly belonged to a nursery, was limited and also contained old trees. For this reason, the building was designed so that the sports areas found their place on the roof of the building. The Athene Primary School was officially opened in 1999. She has been named after the Greek goddess Athena since May 16, 2002.
School life
Mainstream school area
In the standard area of the start of school phase (mixed year 1/2) and grades 3–4, the subjects German, mathematics, specialist knowledge, music, fine arts and sport are taught. At the end of the first and second year of schooling, all students receive a certificate in the form of a verbal assessment. In grades 3 and 4, parents and teachers jointly advise and decide on a new verbal assessment or a grade certificate. From grade 3 onwards, certificates are issued for the school half-year.
From the third grade onwards, English is taught as the first foreign language with two hours per week. The children also go swimming as part of their physical education class.
In the fourth year of school, traffic education is given as a focus in specialist instruction with the aim of passing the cycling test .
In the fifth school year, the subjects history / political education, geography and natural sciences are added. In grades 5 and 6 there are 2 hours of "social learning" (focus) on the timetable every week.
Primary school ends with the 6th grade and the transition to high school.
The care of the pupils as part of the Reliable Half-Day Elementary School (VHG) from 7.30 am to 1.30 pm is provided by the cooperation partner "Neighborhood Home Mittelhof eV" in the rooms of the ATHENE children's home. It is in the immediate vicinity of the school. The VHG is free of charge. Supplementary care modules before and after the VHG period as well as during the holidays are possible. They are chargeable.
A warm lunch is also possible for students who do not take part in the supplementary care offer of the ATHENE children's home. This requires the conclusion of a private contract with the food company.
European school area
The State European School German-Greek (SESB) is a bilingual school in which the learning groups are always composed in two languages. The Europaschule sees itself as a school in which, in addition to intensive language acquisition, the focus is on the concept of direct intercultural contact between people from different languages and cultures.
The languages German and Greek are spoken equally in class (50% each). The rules and regulations of the Berlin School apply to the SESB (e.g. for framework curricula, grades and transitions). Mathematics is taught in German for all children and science, history and geography for all children in Greek. The remaining learning areas are divided between the two languages. As in the regular school sector, the children in the first and second year of school attendance learn together in the mixed age group from the beginning of school. In the 5th grade, lessons begin with another language as a foreign language, this is English.
Attending the SESB is voluntary and requires the consent of the legal guardian. Admission is based on the guidelines of the Berlin School. The prerequisite for admission to a European class is not the child's nationality or place of residence, but command of one of the two languages at native level. In the other language, language skills must be proven that can be expected to lead to successful participation in the class.
Participation in the all-day operation in the European School is mandatory. This means that the children take part in afternoon care until 4 p.m., which is also available in two languages. For the students u. a. Well-equipped leisure rooms and library are available. Lunch is offered at school and must be paid for by parents. Supplementary care modules for the time before 7.30 a.m. and after 4.00 p.m. as well as the holiday periods are possible. They are chargeable.
If more students are registered for the first year of school attendance at the Europaschule than there are places available, the lot will decide.

After the end of classes or during free periods, students from the Athene Primary School can spend their time in the Athene children's home.
