Athletic Model Guild ( AMG ) is an American company headquartered in El Cerrito , California .
The company was founded in 1945 by photographer Bob Mizer , who was one of the pioneers of male, gay nude photography in the United States. Mizer opened the AMG Studios in Los Angeles in 1945 . His first cataloged photo model was Forrester Millard . In 1947 Mizer spent six months imprisonment at the Saugus Prison Farm after he had been convicted of distributing male nude photography in the US postal service, which was then a criminal offense. In May 1951, AMG published the first issue of Physique Photo News , which was renamed Physique Pictorial in November 1951 . In 1957 AMG published the photo catalog 1000 Model Directory . Young Adonis magazine was first published in 1963. In 1968 US penal laws on nude photography were liberalized and in 1973 the television documentary Inside AMG was released . AMG photographed various actors and bodybuilders in the 1960s and 1970s, including Joe Dallesandro , Ed Fury and Glenn Corbett . In 1975 the actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger had himself photographed by AMG.
In 1982 the publisher Gay Sunshine Press published the book Physique: A Pictorial History of Athletic Model Guild and in 1987 the French book Athletic Model Guild: 160 Garçons Americans by Ralf Marsault appeared . In 1990 Campfire Films produced the first of five documentaries about AMG entitled Fantasy Factory .
Mizer died in Los Angeles in May 1992 and his friend Wayne Stanley sold the company to photographer Dennis Bell in 2004 . In 2005 AMG released the film AMG Resurrection with the model Jason Adonis and in 2006 AMG Brasil was released.
