The stratovolcano Atitlán is located in Guatemala and is the highest of three eye-catching volcanoes at the southern end of Atitlan III Caldera . Together with its twin volcano Toliman and the volcano San Pedro , it forms an impressive panorama on the shores of Lake Atitlán .
The Atitlán is younger than the voluminous, 85,000 year old Los Chocoyos tephra layers, which were deposited when the caldera was formed. The northern part of the volcano is forested, the upper 1000 meters of the southern part of the crater, however, show no vegetation. Explosive eruptions have been recorded repeatedly since the 15th century.
