Atlético San Francisco is a Mexican soccer club from the city of San Francisco del Rincón in the state of Guanajuato . The club was represented in the country's second-highest division for seven years between 1992 and 1999.

history

league

The club started in the third-rate Tercera Division and rose to the second-rate Segunda Division after winning the 1991/92 season . In this league the team played until the introduction of the Primera División 'A' , which was the second highest division in the country from the 1994/95 season and the Segunda División thus de facto demoted to the third highest division.

In the opening season of the Primera División 'A', San Francisco took third place in the overall table and qualified for the semifinals in the subsequent play-offs . There they were eliminated from the later second division champions and promoted Atlético Celaya after two times 1: 1 only because of the poorer preliminary round placement.

After that it went downhill all the time. The last time in the 1996/97 season was the qualification for the play-offs - which ended in the quarter-finals - and at the end of the 1998/99 season the club rose to the now only third-class Segunda Division after seven years of membership in the second division. After San Francisco had just missed the immediate resurgence at the end of the 1999/00 season, the club withdrew from the Segunda División at the end of the 2004/05 season and since then has only played in the now fourth-rate Tercera Division.

Cup

In the 1994/95, 95/96 and 96/97 seasons, when the second division clubs were allowed to take part in the Mexican cup competition , the San Francisco team achieved two sensational first-round victories over Guadalajara (3-2 in 1994/95) and Toluca (1 : 0 in 1995/96), before narrowly failing in the second round to América (0: 1) and Pachuca (1: 2). In 1996/97 the cup competition was held in groups of eight teams each, with San Francisco taking the penultimate place, but again defeating a first division club , this time UAG Tecos 2-1 , in the opening game .

Nickname

The nickname Brujos ( witches ) arose from a legend according to which the community of San Francisco del Rincón was populated by witches. The legend probably originated from an onion-like plant growing in the region .
