The Atlantic Road (Norwegian ( Nynorsk ) Atlanterhavsvegen ) is a section of the Norwegian State Road 64 and is located in the Fylke Møre og Romsdal between Molde and Kristiansund .

Strictly speaking, the Atlantic Road covers an 8,274 meter long section between Vevang in the municipality of Hustadvika and Kårvåg , located on an island, in the municipality of Averøy . Due to its course with eight bridges over several small islands, the road , which is part of the Norwegian landscape routes, is a tourist attraction. Locals also like to go fishing there.

Since the Atlantic Road is exactly at the exit of a fjord , when the tide changes between the individual, small islands over which the Atlantic Road leads, powerful currents occur, which is why all fishing spots and viewing platforms are cordoned off to avoid accidents.

history

The road follows a route that was originally planned for a railway line. The first plans go back to the beginning of the 20th century; In 1935, however, these plans were finally put aside. Road planning then began in the 1970s.

Construction began on August 1, 1983; the road opened on July 7, 1989, replacing a ferry service that ran on a similar route. The construction cost 122 million Norwegian kroner (1989), and the road was subject to tolls for ten years after it opened.

On September 27, 2005, the Atlantic Road was declared "Norwegian Building of the Century".
