Atlantis is a video game from the Shoot-'em-up - genre , that of Imagic in July 1982 for the Atari 2600 was released. It was written by Dennis Koble, who previously wrote the games Trick Shot , Solar Storm and Shootin 'Gallery for Imagic. The game was ported for Atari home computers , the Commodore VIC 20 / C64, the Intellivision and the Philips Videopac G7000 and was inspired by Taito's 1981 arcade game Colony 7 .

The game Cosmic Ark , also developed by Imagic, is seen by many players as the spiritual successor to Atlantis .

Gameplay

The game Atlantis is about collecting as many points as possible by shooting at spaceships . The player controls three turrets that shoot diagonally to the right, diagonally to the left and straight up, with the middle tower giving the least points for a hit due to the fact that this is the easiest to hit the spaceships. The maximum possible number of points is 9,999,999. The gameplay is similar to that of Star Trek: Phaser Strike .

The Intellivision version also contains two turrets with a moving cursor that can be aimed at enemy ships. There is also an operational spaceship that can take on enemies. The game offers settings for day, dusk and night, with the night setting limiting visibility to the scope of illumination from two moving searchlights.

action

The game takes place in the city of Atlantis, which is attacked by the so-called Gorgon invaders with spaceships. The player controls the turrets of Atlantis and must protect the city from the destruction of the Gorgon invaders.

Destination Atlantis

In 1982 Imagic organized a competition for Atlantis players under the name "Destination Atlantis". Imagic invited all players to send them screenshots of their high scores . The players with the highest high score should be rewarded with the game Atlantis II . The game principle works similarly to Atlantis, but it is more difficult because it contains more, faster and stronger opponents. Due to its rarity, the game is now a sought-after collector's item.

Trivia

  • As with many games that appeared in the early days of the Atari 2600, Atlantis is also available in two variants, which only differ in the game module : the original variant has a white sticker on which all relevant information about the game is written in black while the newer version has an artwork printed on the sticker.
