Attilio Simonetti (born April 13, 1843 in Rome ; † January 14, 1925 there ) was a Roman genre painter and art dealer.

Life

Attilio Simonetti came from a family of artists: his father Francesco Simonetti had worked as a silversmith since 1828 , his younger brother Ettore (1857–1909), his nephew Amedeo (1874–1922) and his son Virgilio (1897–1922) were also painters .

Attilio Simonetti became a student and close friend of the Catalan Mariano Fortuny during his stay in Rome. From this he learned the watercolor painting technique.

Together with Ettore Roesler Franz and eight other painters, he founded the Associazione degli Acquarellisti in Rome in 1875 , which, among other things, organized annual exhibitions. In several of the association's catalogs, however, he was only represented as a member; own works were not listed.

In 1877 he exhibited the paintings Dopo il ballo (today in the Museo Irpino in Avellino ), Un araldo , Un tamburo , Ogni speranza è morta and Via Giuseppe Mancinelli in Palazzuolo Castrocelo in Naples . In 1883 he participated in the Mostra di Belle Arti in Rome with the watercolor paintings Un governatore , Gioia materna and La filatrice .

In addition to his artistic work, Simonetti was also active as a collector and dealer of old works of art. At some point he even gave up painting in order to devote himself entirely to trading. In 1883 his collection was exhibited for sale in the Palazzo Theodoli in Rome.

Nowadays, the sixth generation of the antiquarian bookshop is run as Goffi Carboni Antiquariato .
