The main industry of the city is craft leather processing. This craftsmanship has a long tradition and goes back to the Franciscan missionaries of the 16th century, who taught the natives this skill. Every year there is a big leather fair - the Expo Cuero Atyrá . There are also sawmills and factories for the production of coconut oil.

The city has applied for, in 2019 in the "network of creative cities" category crafts and folk art of Unesco for inclusion.

Cleanest city in Paraguay

Atyrá has been called the cleanest city in the country for many years. It started in 1991 with the election of Feliciano Martínez as mayor. Before that, it had the reputation of being one of the dirtiest cities in Paraguay. The roadsides were full of rubbish, nobody wanted to live in the city. Comedians made fun of the place with sentences like: "If you want to find weeds and cow dung, go to Atyrá!"

The new mayor introduced self-government and cleanliness competitions for each district. This created a competitive spirit among the residents to keep their neighborhood clean, which after a few years became a habit and spread throughout the city. Atyrá became more and more attractive and more and more people moved to the city. In 1996 it was declared the “First Healthy City of Paraguay” (Primera Ciudad Saludable del Paraguay) by the World Health Organization .

His successor, Mayor Juan Matto, also continued this policy. Of the 30 employees who work in the city administration, 10 work in street cleaning. In addition, all pupils in the city have to keep their school premises clean every day at 9.30 a.m. in small groups with garbage bags in hand and also pay attention to waste separation. Throwing candy wrappers on the ground is even forbidden in the city. Putting up election posters on street lamps, trees or walls during the elections is also not permitted, as this represents visual environmental pollution according to the city ordinance.

Marianela Monastery

The 7,000 m² monastery on the green outskirts of Atyrá is a replica of a medieval monastery. It was built according to an architectural design by the Italian Father Attilio Cordioli of the "Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer" and completed in 2008. He chose the Atyrá location for the project because of its beautiful landscape and nature. The monastery is adorned with numerous works of art and wall paintings by Paraguayan and international artists, each wooden door of the 93 rooms was decorated differently. Extensive self-sufficiency is practiced on the 58 hectare property with fruit and vegetable gardens as well as cattle. It is open to visitors and offers overnight accommodation in double rooms.

Dakar Rally 2017

A special event for the residents was the start of the Dakar Rally on January 2, 2017, which took place simultaneously in Asunción and Atyrá. 50,000 visitors lined the streets of the city. Mayor Matto had ecological plastic bags distributed to the audience for their waste. However, the organizer failed to set up enough toilets. The artisans reported the sale of their goods right from the start.
